Numb3rs “The Decoy Effect”
In this episode, a group of thugs is kidnapping women off the street, and then forcing them to take money out of their accounts via ATM. The team has the idea of putting Nikki undercover, in hopes of having her picked up by the thugs and thus gaining insider information on how their operation is running and what their overarching goals are. This is tricky of course, since the kidnappings are somewhat random. There is some consistency in the type of woman picked up, as well as environmental factors such as both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, time of day, and lack of lighting on the street. The team wants to maximize the chances that Nikki, the decoy, is chosen by the kidnappers. The Decoy Effect, also known as asymmetric dominance, describes how the choices offered can affect what decisions people make when balancing functionality and cost.
