Tough day in Algebra II - Assessments

Algebra II

It was a tough day in Algebra II today for many students.  It seems that some got "surprised" by the assessment and found that they weren't prepared for success.  I'd like to offer some suggestions, in no particular order:
  • The standards are posted days prior to the assessment. The standards tell you exactly what you need to know.
    • If you don't understand what the standards mean, ask questions!
  • Other students tell you "It's hard!"
    • Don't let them defeat you before you've even looked at the assessment yourself.
  • You are responsible for your learning!!
    • Use your class time wisely.
    • Get help before school, after school, during academic advising.
    • Use the Moodle resources.
    • Questions in the evening or on the weekend?
      • email me!
    • Start your projects immediately!
      • The saying "The sooner I get behind, the more time I have to catch up" doesn't work!
If there's any good news, it's that retakes are available for any and all assessments. Take heart, learn from your troubles, and move forward!

Algebra II Assessments on Friday (9/27)!!

  • Assessments on Friday (9/27) over the following standards:
    • HSN-VM.C.9. (+) Understand that, unlike multiplication of numbers, matrix multiplication for square matrices is not a commutative operation, but still satisfies the associative and distributive properties.
    • HSN-VM.C.10. (+) Understand that the zero and identity matrices play a role in matrix addition and multiplication similar to the role of 0 and 1 in the real numbers. The determinant of a square matrix is nonzero if and only if the matrix has a multiplicative inverse.
    • HSA-REI.C.8. (+) Represent a system of linear equations as a single matrix equation in a vector variable.
    • HSA-REI.C.9. (+) Find the inverse of a matrix if it exists and use it to solve systems of linear equations (using technology for matrices of dimension 3 × 3 or greater).

Algebra II schedule for 9/16-20/2013

Sorry for the lack of blog posts towards the end of last week. Time got away from me. Here's the schedule for the week of 9/16-20:

  • Be prepared Monday
    • ...to redo/correct/finish today’s problems
    • ...for another set of matrix multiplication story problems
  • Be prepared Tuesday
    • ...for a Summative Assessment on Matrix Basics
      • Data in Matrices
        • HSN-VM.C.6. (+) Use matrices to represent and manipulate data, e.g., to represent payoffs or incidence relationships in a network.
      • Multiply matrices by a scalar
        • HSN-VM.C.7. (+) Multiply matrices by scalars to produce new matrices, e.g., as when all of the payoffs in a game are doubled.
      • Adding, Subtracting, Rows, Columns, Elements, Dimensions, etc.
        • HSN-VM.C.8. (+) Add, subtract, and multiply matrices of appropriate dimensions.

      • Use your computer time wisely by having your stick figure, storyline and some matrix transformation calculations ready!
  • Be prepared Friday...
    • ...for a Summative Assessment on Matrix Multiplication.
      • HSN-VM.C.8. (+) Add, subtract, and multiply matrices of appropriate dimensions.

Assignments for Thursday, 9/5/2013

Algebra II:
We began class today with a Poll - "My first day of school was ..."
We used the remainder of the hour to review "Solving Systems of Equations"

Group Activity - Solving Systems of Equations Review
  • (5 min) Intro to class and assign group activity for reviewing "Solving Systems of Equations"
We postponed the "Know and Need-to-Know" charting till tomorrow to allow more time for review.

Assignments
  • Enroll in Algebra II Moodle Class (enrollment key is “Staublin”).
  • If you are not 100% confident how to solve systems of equations by graphing, substitution and/or elimination, go to Moodle and watch the review video(s) you need prior to coming to class tomorrow. There will be opportunities for questions and more review tomorrow.
