Assignments for Wednesday, 10/26

Discrete Math:
Dustin Osborned from AXA Financial spoke to us today and answered questions about investing money and saving for retirement.  Quiz 11:3-4 was due at the beginning of the hour.  Any turned in later (even during class) are considered late.  Check Moodle and make sure you are aware of what your assignments are and when they are due.  Lastly, flex days do not require you to be out of the building; if you need help, feel free to come to class.

Algebra II:
Today we completed our study of matrices by learning how they can be used to solve systems of equations with three variables.  We also learned that the only disadvantage of using matrices is that they can't discriminate between a system with zero solutions and one with infinite solutions.
Assignment 4-7: 3-15 multiples of 3, 16, 21-25, 34-35, 53, 56
Quiz tomorrow over 4:3-5, C4 test next Tuesday.

Assignments for Friday, 10/21

Discrete Math:
Today we learned about Amortized Loans, like those one would get from a bank to buy a car or home.  The assignment is 11-5: 1, 11, 5, 13, 17-18.
On Monday, students will be receiving a project that requires them, based on an annual salary, to buy a house and a car using amortized loans.  They will also be receiving a take home quiz.  The remaining days till the mid-semester exam will be flex days for all students.  Deliverables prior to the exam will include completion of the take-home quiz, completion of the project, completion of an on-line test, and review for the exam.  I am also attempting to schedule a speaker to come in and discuss savings and investments.  When I know that date, I will communicate it everyone.
I'd also like to express my concern that students are not investing the amount of time and effort it takes to be successful in this class.  Even though the next two weeks are flex attendance, it doesn't mean there is no work to do.  Students should expect that the assignments will take quite a bit of time and effort to complete well.

Algebra II:
Today was a work matrix work day and an opportunity for students to take charge of their own learning.  Students did a 4-question quiz prep, corrected yesterday's assignment, and worked on today's assignment 4-2:1, 5-11 odds, 12-17, 21, 23, 26, 29, 31-40, 44.
